Cross-Disciplinary Views on Modelling Complex Systems

چکیده
This paper summarises work within an interdisciplinary collaboration which has explored different approaches to modelling complex systems in order to identify and develop common tools and techniques. We present an overview of the models that have been explored and the techniques that have been used by two of the partners within the project. On the one hand, there is a partner with a background in agent-based social simulation, and on the other, one with a background in equationbased modelling in theoretical physics. Together we have examined a number of problems involving complexity, modelling them using different approaches and gaining an understanding of how these alternative approaches may guide our own work. Our main finding has been that the two approaches are complimentary, and are suitable for exploring different aspects of the same problems.

Today’s interconnected socio-economic and environmental challenges require the combination and reuse of existing integrated modelling solutions. This paper contributes to this overall research area, by reviewing a wide range of currently available frameworks, systems and emerging technologies for integrated modelling in the environmental sciences. Based on a systematic review of the literature,...
متن کاملMulti-resolution analysis as a tool for integrating wind and vegetation modeling over complex terrains
The paper presents the main directions of a forthcoming research project, aiming to connect wind, terrain and vegetation modelling. The approach is cross-disciplinary and consists of coupling Large Eddy Simulation techniques, 3D digital terrain representations, landscape models and vegetation patterns. In order to provide descriptions of the surface properties at the relevant scales, it is envi...
متن کاملView-based Modelling and State-Space Generation for Graph Transformation Systems
Modelling complex systems by graph transformation, we face scalability challenges both in our ability to create and understand these models and in the ability of tools to analyse them. To address these problems we propose to model graph transformation systems in views which can be understood and analysed separately. In particular, we show that transition systems can be generated separately for ...
متن کاملHybrid Modelling using Neuro Fractal for Fractured Reservoirs
Due to geological reasons, fractured reservoirs are extremely heterogeneous. Modelling of these reservoirs has so far been considered complex and progress is still inadequate. This paper presents a novel and hybrid method to model discrete fracture networks in naturally fractured reservoirs. It involves investigation and systematic integration of tasks spanning cross-disciplinary areas: geologi...
